AbstractCloud cover in optical observations of the Brazilian Amazon is very commom. The example of the state of Amapá is very useful, because the probability of an observation per year at 30% cloud cover is close to zero. In this way, synthetic aperture radar presents as a powerful mechanism to mapping deforestation in tropical regions, such as the Brazilian Amazon. Therefore, JERS-1 SAR mosaics provided by the Global Rain Forest Mapping (GRFM) were utilized to study the applicability of radar data in the deforestation mapping in that regions. As a result, three accuracy assessments were produced to confirm the purpose of the project, which demonstrated satisfactory results.
